California AI Anti-Discrimination Bill Pared to Employment Acts

  • Ambitious measures face state’s severe budget deficit

  • State’s AI work attracting national attention, lobbying

Major artificial intelligence measures in California that would set the nation’s standard on public safety rules around AI models and establish rules to prevent discrimination from algorithms were approved Thursday by the legislature’s appropriation committees.

However, the scope of the anti-discrimination measure was narrowed significantly in an attempt to reduce costs, applying to employment matters only instead of the wide-ranging scope of housing, health, and other issues.

The legislature’s approximately 40 AI bills now have to clear a final floor vote by the end of this month before adjournment.
