In 1951 Perry Brickman and three Jewish friends enrolled in the Emory University School of Dentistry. By 1953, all four—the only Jewish students in their year—had been dismissed for academic failure.
The embarrassed friends went their separate ways. They didn’t talk about what had happened, establishing a sort of fraternity of silence. Brickman eventually became a well-regarded Atlanta oral surgeon.
