What’s under Evanston?This summer, the RoundTable hosted four budding journalists from Evanston Township High School: Ryder Bingaman, Hannah Cervantes, Anya Gill and Will Klearman. While writing about current events in Evanston, they wrote this series about past or unnoticed Evanston. This is the third article in a four-part series.
Evanston is a historic city that has been the birthplace of many prominent figures and movements. While people tend to focus on the lives of famous Evanstonians, they often overlook their deaths and know little to nothing about their final resting places. Most of these figures came from decades ago, but some might wonder: “Who is under Evanston?”
Though some more well-known historical figures like Frances E. Willard and Orrington Lunt are buried at Rosehill Cemetery on the north side of Chicago, many famous Chicagoans and Evanstonians are buried at Calvary Catholic Cemetery on Sheridan Road, at the southeastern border of Evanston. Consecrated on Nov. 2, 1859, the cemetery was for a time one of the prominent burial grounds for the Chicago area.
