The number of birthday cards depicting getting older in a negative light is an example of how pervasive ageism is, according to Torrens University's Rachel Ambagtsheer. Images by Esty, Marcella Meneguello.

The sheer volume of birthday cards that depict getting older in a bad light is an example of society's prejudice towards ageing, an academic says.

Torrens University's Rachel Ambagtsheer is a researcher in the field of gerontology.

She says stamping out ageism in society starts with people educating themselves about it. Rachel used birthday card designs as an example of widespread attitudes towards ageing.

"If you stop and think about how many of the birthday cards equate to ageing with things like nursing home entry, losing your marbles and all the rest, it's really quite pervasive," she said.
