Meeting with the Albanian Anti-Discrimination Commissioner

On 19 June, the Department for the Execution of Judgments met with the Albanian Anti-discrimination Commissioner Robert Gajda to exchange on the implementation of the European Court’s judgments in respect of Albania.

The discussion concerned the measures to implement X and Others v. Albania ahead of its second examination by the Committee of Ministers, foreseen for its December 2025 Human Rights meeting. This case concerns the authorities’ failure to implement desegregation measures in the "Naim Frashëri" elementary school in Korça attended almost exclusively by Roma and Egyptian children.

The Commissioner gave an update on the status of execution from the perspective of his institution and expressed the commitment to support the authorities with the identification and implementation of decisive desegregation measures in schools across the country.

This meeting also allowed for an exchange regarding the case of Strazimiri v. Albania which concerns the poor conditions of detention and inadequate medical treatment of a person with mental health issues subject to a court-ordered compulsory medical treatment.
