Finding Compassion in the Darkness of Racism and Discrimination

Navigate the weight of discrimination with awareness, connection, and kindness.

The semester just wrapped up, conferences are behind me, and as I sit down at my desk gearing up for a summer full of research and consulting calls, I am reflecting on the weight many of us carry—especially those navigating professional spaces while grappling with racism and discrimination in their daily lives. It remains a lot. Not just for the students I've written about on this page, but for clinicians, our clients, and even our family members who share similar experiences.

One evening, after a particularly tough day marked by news headlines about racial violence and my own frustration over how the current administration’s research cuts were finally amplifying a problem that so many of us have been trying to highlight for decades, I found myself overwhelmed. I knew I needed something different than just scrolling social media or venting endlessly. I needed a moment of peace — a moment to find compassion amid the chaos.
